The sun is shining down on America’s finest city, the streets are getting busy, the beaches busier and the skirts are getting shorter. That’s right, Summer 2011 has finally arrived in San Diego.
We’ve refreshed our nightlife routine for the occasion. Our previous guests will already know that every night we host a different event for you to enjoy. As well as our free dinners on Tuesdays and Thursdays and our free hot dogs and Ice cream on a Sunday we try to keep you as entertained as possible in the evenings after your hard day of exploring our beautiful city. We want to let you know what goes on here so that you can plan ahead for your visit!
Here’s what we’re gunna do with you when you get here:
Monday: Every Monday we give you a choice of a quiet night in watching a choice of movies in the common room with free hot popcorn, or we invite you to join Lucy in La Peurta, a downtown bar which offers half price drinks and food every Monday, bargain!!!
Tuesday: After a delicious free dinner you are invited to join Tolga in the common room for a pretty serious poker session, of course this all depends on how seriously you wan to take it!
Wednesday: It’s bar crawl time with Juliet. Get ready to get messy as she starts you off on $2 beers at the shout house and finishes you of singing your heart out at Maloneys for some kareoke. If you are lucky you’ll be here on a one of the two Wednesdays a week when El Dorado host the ultimate Dubstep night which is proving to be the hottest night in town amongst San Diego’s trendy set, it is really popular with staff members and they would be more than happy to bring you along!
Thursday: Fill yourself with our good food, buy some drinks and get ready for the ultimate quiz with our lovely host Alexis. She will test your knowledge, award you with Champagne and take you out on the town. Often, we head to the rooftop bar at the Ivy where we can get you in for free, we got your back…
Friday Our new deputy manager Joe will bring you to some of his favorite bars in the evening after you have had the opportunity to Michelle on a walking tour of the historic Gaslamp quarter.
Saturday : Busiest night in the city! Join Jaime in the common room for good old fashioned American drinking games, this usually starts with the competitive yet messy BEER PONG.
Sunday What’s not to love about a Sunday? We give you free hot dogs AND free ice cream and then Katie would only love for you to join her in San Diego’s local Drum and Bass night in the Gaslamp. Don’t fancy D&B? She’ll take you where you do fancy. She fancy.
So, how do you like them apples? Bet you wanna stay for a week now so you can take a bite out of every night? Why don’t you? If not, at least now you can see what nights you’d most hang out with us. We want you to have fun, when you do, so do we.
Book now loved ones!!!
What We Gunna Do With You??
Hate to See You Go, Love to Watch You Leave..
Lucky D’s, a home away from home. We are so very proud of our staff here and the friendships and bonds that they form with our guests. Our guest book and online reviews all reflect the strong relationships that develop between staff and guests. This time of year we are welcoming an array of new staff and watching a number of some of our favorites leave.
Today we want to pay homage to a very special manager that left us and his replacement. Jordan Hachtel, ladies and gentlemen, has left the building, and has he left us with big shoes to fill. We are sure that many of you will have met and will remember that big old lovable Jew who has left us for his beloved in England. We’ll allow it though. We would like to say that he really was a very special hard working member of this hostel and that his ways will never be forgotten… He signed the guest book telling us:
‘I’m going to spend the rest of my life missing this place and the people in it.’
Back at ya big guy!
Now… In his place we have the lovely Joe Loftus, we’re sure you know him. He’s the guy who couldn’t wait for Jordan to leave so he could storm his bedroom and give it an extreme makeover. More so than that, Joe is Jordan’s best friend and he is sure to do for the hostel exactly what Jordan did, improve it. So… Here’s to Joe!
The Summer is coming, we are getting busier, and that means more staff. We are having our second Irish takeover this summer with the return of prestigious housekeepers Juliet and Daniel who have now been bumped up to desk. You can expect to see their funny faces as you trek up our stairs to check in. The Ciara’s are also returning. You would remember their crazy antics from the Summer of ’09. We love it when our past staff and guests return to visit. Please come back, we miss you all!
We are proud of our staff here in Lucky D’s. They all work and party hard. They want you to love the hostel as much as they do and so this blog is dedicated to them. Come meet them, they love for new people to come join the party. Tweet

Tweet$20 bottomless fun, all night!
$20 won’t buy you much. In a restaurant, it might cover a nice steak that will leave your stomach growling for more after just a couple of hours. In a club, you might get two drinks if you’re lucky. In a hotel that same $20 might just be a tip in the porter’s pocket. The fact is there’s not much that $20 can get you that can change your evening and possibly your whole vacation. This is why Lucky D’s Hostel is so special. A single crisp $20 bill is all it takes to have a night of your life.
On a basic level you’ll get a roof over your head in a clean room with a comfortable bed and clean sheets, but your money buys you more than that. That same $20 bill will also allow you to have a space in one of the coolest hostels around, the chance to meet other like-minded travellers and also includes tons of freebies. Who would have thought that the change in your pocket could bring you so much?!
Here at Lucky D’s we want you to have the time of your life. From the moment you walk up the stairs you start reaping the benefits of that single $20 bill. You will be surrounded by artistic and bright décor, with artwork submitted by the staff and guests, music coming from the overhead speaker system, playing all the hits as well as music from days gone by, and even themed playlists chosen by staff and guests, and you’ll also see smiling faces wherever you look. When you check in with one of our brilliant reception staff, you’ll be told all about the amenities, organized events, and you can even plan the day ahead by making use of our insider knowledge of the city. You may even be lucky enough to have your bags carried to your room by one of our muscular workers!
Of course, we want you to have the best possible visit. This is why we offer free food every morning and three evenings a week included in that initial $20 bill. The freebies don’t end there, with a freephone, free laundry powder, free walking tour and even free tea and coffee all day every day. If you have a laptop with you, you can make use of our free WiFi, and if you don’t, you can make use of our free computer rooms with full Internet access 24 hours a day. For those who prefer snail mail, will even post your stamped postcards for you — just drop them in our outgoing mailbox. You will always be fully connected at Lucky D’s hostel.
We understand that some travellers are a little more mindful of the money they spend. We care as much as you do about that $20 bill in your pocket, which is why a stay at Lucky D’s will provide you with everything you need for not a penny more. You will get first class service from the moment you walk in our door, and what’s even better is that you don’t need to tip us a cent!

TweetBooking hostels San Diego-style!
There are many hostels San Diego is known for, but the question on many people’s lips is how to make sure you’re booking the right one for you. For a start, very few people realize that despite there being many hostels, San Diego has many different locations, different atmospheres, and places to stay that range from the budget, out of the way motel to the plush beachside hotel with the price tag to match.
The first question to ask when booking a hostel is “is a hostel right for me?” An easy way to decide this is to ask yourself what you enjoy. Hostels, San Diego and drinking go hand in hand, so if you love to socialize, party, meet new people and hang out in an environment designed for fun then a hostel is perfect for you.
The next thing to consider is what kind of a budget you are on. The hostels San Diego’s known for are generally around the $20-30 price range per bed per night, and this normally includes breakfast, linens and in the better hostels, evening meals and activities too. The three main downtown hostels offer all of this, and are the best choices for those looking to have fun without breaking the bank. There are those, however, that will charge more and offer less, so be sure to compare the price with what is included. Paying less for a bed in a 12 person dorm may work out to be a terrible decision, if an extra $3 a night means you get a good night’s sleep with only a couple of other roomies.
A big mistake many travellers make is to book the big name chain hostels San Diego websites advertise. Quite often, chains will lower their standards on account of the fact that they have brand recognition on their side, so it is always wise to check out individual reviews, or talk to travellers earlier on in your travels as to what they would recommend. Word of mouth is often the most trustworthy way to book a decent hostel that will leave memories.
One of the best hostels San Diego offers is Lucky D’s… come by and say hello today, we’d love to host you!
TweetShowcasing our new staff!
At Lucky D’s Hostel, San Diego, we form attachments with everyone who comes to stay. Sometimes, we’re lucky enough for some of those people to come back, and luckier still to welcome them into the family of hardworking, hardpartying staff.
Over the Summer, the Irish invasion happened, and with it came a group who quickly became the heart and soul of the hostel. With their studies over, they have returned, and we now welcome one of our newest staff members, Katie!
Come party with the staff and guests at Lucky D’s on YOUR next vacation, book with us today!
TweetThe Christmas Countdown!
There are virtually no downsides to traveling, and many people have the best and happiest memories of their life from the simple and carefree days when they were on the move, but the one thing that can be a slight drag is the holiday season.
At Lucky D’s Hostel, we know our guests are free spirits, travelling to see the sights, experience new thing and eventually go home with a whole new outlook on life, but this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t get a little lonely when the snow is falling back home, and the rest of the family are setting one less place at the holiday dinner table. Here are some ways to beat the Christmas blues….
1) Stay busy. It’s easy to fall into a lull while travelling, especially when you find somewhere as homey and comfortable as Lucky D’s Hostel in San Diego. The big comfy couches and flatscreen TV bigger than Europe can be quite a persuading factor to snuggle up and watch Elf for the hundredth time, especially given the unexpected cold outside. Waking up early and spending the day exploring is a great way to bring the mood back up to happy, and take in the festivities of the world around you without dwelling on what you’re missing back home.
2) Use Skype. That wonderful invention that allows us to talk face-to-face with the ones we love thousands of miles away, as if they were sat on the chair next to us. Rope in another guest to sit and meet your family, and share your festive experiences with them. Lucky D’s Hostel has computer rooms on every floor which allow guests the chance to chat any time of night, so those pesky time differences won’t be an issue. Even schedule an activity such as a crossword, and make it a weekly activity. You’ll feel a part of home life in no time!
3) Join in the activities. You’d be surprised how much the Lucky D’s Hostel staff represent a family for those who are away from theirs. Christmas day has present swaps, champagne breakfasts and themed Christmas outings, and the days leading up to them are no different. The staff are also away from their families, and know exactly how to drink/party/dance the holiday blues away so that this can be the best holiday season yet! The common room is the best place to start, get involved in a drinking game, suggest a film to watch or even get out the cards… you’ll be surrounded in no time!
4) Stay healthy. It can be hard to remember to drink those glasses of water last thing before you sleep, especially if the dollar margaritas are still circulating the system. Nonetheless, a little healthy balance to the indulgence will help the body fight of the sniffles, aches and pains, and will help you wake up each morning feeling ready to explore the city.
5) Leave us a review! Doing a good deed for others will make you feel great. We thrive on the positive things our guests have to say, and we work hard to make sure that your happy experiences here as passed on to as many people as possible. Websites such as hostelworld, yelp and tripadvisor are perfect for telling us what you think, and we read every single review to make sure we are offering the best service we can.
Today is the last day in November, which means the real Christmas Countdown starts tomorrow. Make sure you have everything you need for a pleasant holiday vacation, and be sure to secure your place at the hostel everyone’s been talking about – Lucky D’s Hostel San Diego!
